These dogs are very intelligent and sensitive and crave companionship. They are at their happiest when they are among humans and a family member. Many pet owners report that they are just like humans in the way they think about problems. So like humans they need lots of companionship and exercise.<\/p>\n
The breed can be described as a medium to large sized flying dog with a muscular body, deep chest and long neck with a slightly pointed face. Its long ears are kept folded and hanging close to the head.<\/p>\n
The Weimaraner only has two color alleles and in order to make a Blue Weimaraner, at least one allele must be blue. If a Weimaraner inherits a blue allele, it will be blue.<\/p>\n
Weimaraner training must begin as soon as the dog is brought home to enforce the house\/family rules and must be kept strict so that the dog understands what is and is not permitted.<\/p>\n
Owners need patience, as this breed is particularly energetic and difficult to control during its first year and a half of life. Like many breeds, untrained, un-neutered puppies often create diversions of their own when left on their own, such as chewing on home quarters and furniture.<\/p>\n
Historically, ownership of these attractive gray dogs was closely guarded and breeding was tightly controlled by the nobles, and later by the German Weimaraner Club. In fact, Weimaraner ownership was carefully restricted for decades and only members of the upper class German Weimaraner Club were allowed to own the breed. Due to this exclusive ownership, almost all of these dogs lived indoors and where they were very much pampered, resulting in a strong attachment to family life that continues to this day.<\/p>\n
The Weim (as they are affectionately known) is not made for a person or family who works all day or who doesn’t have a lot of time to devote to a dog. Their energy level is very high. A Weim is a lot of dog training and obedience is a must. In obedience training, you will learn that the heel is a very specific position for your dog, and you will need to use it often when you are out with him.<\/p>\n
However, Weims are a very special breed of dog and most fall in love with them because they have such human characteristics. But, please be sure to research the breed before purchasing, and take extra care to make sure the Weim is right for you. The Weims are to be forgiven as world-class home designers and home removers. They can be like having an extra baby!<\/p>\n
They have a lot of energy, as they were originally bred to hunt all day with their master. Changing this behavior changes the basic Weim requirements at your peril, so be sure to practice Weim consistently.<\/p>\n
Weimaraners are often gentle with children, but like any dog \u200b\u200bthey are not recommended for very young people because they can be boisterous enough to accidentally knock a child down.<\/p>\n
This breed loves to bark too!<\/p>\n
